Are You On ArtStack?

I'm the first to admit that my knowledge of art (contemporary art in particular) leaves a lot to be desired and it's something I often wish I would rectify but never get round to doing. So I was pretty pleased to receive an invite from an artist friend to social platform ArtStack, a sort of Pinterest for the visual arts if you will. The site is amazingly slick and polished and full of delight upon visual delight. You can follow artists, curators and other members, known as 'stackers' – instead of pinning, you stack. This is great for artists as it means they can create their own online portfolio. Plus you can do all the usual social media type things like create collections, explore your friends' stacks, comment, use a toolbar widget to stack from elsewhere on t'internet and there's also an iPhone app. Previously invite only, you can now request an invitation on the homepage. It's gorgeous to the eye, a lovely online experience, so if you start stacking – above and below are my very first stacks – you can find me under Julia Rebaudo.
Update: ArtStack has kindly sent through an invitation link for Stylonylon readers. See you there!

Let's please talk about Vine and how much I love it! It's so completely addictive, although I didn't quite get it at first. But it only took a few tries to get the hang of it – it's super easy to make a six second video of absolutely anything (I am in extreme awe of the dedicated #stopanimation Viners who create captivating little clips of things I could never come up with). Anyway, it's fun, easy and brings in the results which is perfect for events like London Fashion Week – heady little snippets of the action, the style and the buzz is what people love about fashion week and this is just what Vine provides. Here are two of my videos from LFW Day 1 – the now infamous FelderFelder queue (the filming's a bit jerky, sorry about that!) in Somerset House and the screening room for all those bods turned away from the actual show itself... Take a look and if you like it, come follow me on Vine – I'm stylonylon – and I'll follow right back. Make sure to leave your tag in the comments. :)

Canon EOS M – The Fashion Blogger's New Best Friend?

New camera obsessions have become a huge part of my photography habit. The perfect camera package – ie. one that is small and light and takes fabulous photographs – is the holy grail, right? My first attempt was the Canon G11, but we never clicked. The ergonomics didn't sit right with me, I never liked how it felt in my hands, I hated the ineffectual viewfinder and I found it clunky taking it out and about. I then developed a serious obsession with the Fuji X100 that was released last year, but though an object of design beauty and by all accounts an outstanding camera I knew it was still too big and clunky. Every now and then I'd let myself drool over Leica models and eventually a bit of research into the Leica X1 – the brand's upper end digital compact built around a lovely big sensor – and a hal price bargain listing on eBay convinced me this model was the answer to (most) of my prayers. Excellent image quality in a superbly light and beautifully designed case has meant this camera has travelled with me all over. It's not an action camera, the autofocus is slow, and the fixed lens is both a creative stimulant and constrictive. Lack of viewfinder and no interchangeable lens capacity aside, this camera has pretty much assuaged my camera lust. Until, that is, the appearance of Canon's new mirrorless interchangeable lens compact this autumn. With a lovely big sensor (the biggest of any compact and same as the one on the Canon DSLR 650d), interchangeable lenses with an adapter for EFS & EF lenses, and at half the size of a DSLR weighing 255g, this model could possibly make redundant my Canon G11 (for sure!) and possibly my 400d body (which I only ever use at home).
What's interesting is how the Canon M has been targeted at creatives and specifically fashion bloggers by way of Andy Torres of Style Scrapbook, who features in one of the five Power to Generation M with Vice campaign videos (see above – lovely video with two inspiring still photography ideas) and is one of three used in the billboard and editorial campaign. I've scanned a few reviews and the upshot seems to be that the image quality is excellent, even as good as the 650d – you can achieve fantastic bokeh and depth of field and the world's your oyster depending on your lens –, and of course nice and portable. The downside seems to be slow autofocus and the weight imbalance when you attach longer lenses to the body. And no viewfinder, but to be honest I think this is just something we will have to learn to live with if we want compactness. My feeling is that the image quality will win out over over the downsides and be extremely appealing to a whole range of photography types. Especially the fashion blogger, who is obsessed with attaining top image quality with as portable a camera as possible. I've noticed Susie Bubble is a creative ambassador for the camera and is sporting one as well as Fashion Bits and Bobs who gives an overview of the camera here. I know for me, having splashed out on a 50mm 1.4 Canon lens which I only use at home, the temptation is huge. I can quite easily see myself chucking my 50mm and a Canon M in a bag for both short and long trips. What about you? Does the Canon M appeal to you? Have you gone ahead and bought one? Do you know any fashion bloggers using one, creative ambassadors aside? I'd love to know!

I know some (lots?) of fashion bloggers refuse to use iPhone photos on their blogs, but you know, I'm always really impressed by the quality of the images you can achieve. And also, it may be a kind of annoying quote, but "The best camera is the one you have with you" does make a lot of sense. So many shots missed because you hadn't lugged out your DSLR. Anyway, I love this shot I managed to take last weekend on a chilly Dorset beach. Run through a Rad Lab filter plugin in Photoshop and the quote is from The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds.
Interview: Pose co-founder Alisa Gould-Simon

stylonylon interviews Alisa Gould-Simon
Former fashion writer Alisa Gould-Simon and her business partner Dustin Rosen joined forces in 2011 to release a beta version of style and photo sharing app Pose. With stylist Rachel Zoe, the senior fashion director of Barney's and super blogger Leandre Medine of Man Repeller on board, the app now has more than 1 million users worldwide and 10,000 photos uploaded daily. (I joined recently and after being featured amassed more than 4000 followers in a weekend - amazing!). The Los Angeles based Alisa tells us more and talks us through her style.
What inspired you to start Pose?
I
teamed up with Dustin Rosen, Pose's CEO and my co-founder, nearly two
years ago. We both were looking to change the way that people discovered
and consumed fashion. Dustin has a background in finance and
technology, whereas I come from a fashion journalism and marketing
background, so we were a pretty perfect match. We realized that photos
(and in our case, tagged images) could be a highly effective way of
broadcasting your personal and daily style to followers from around the
world. So, we built this in the form of an app and have been going
full-steam ahead ever since.
What role do fashion, photography and styling play in your life?
Fashion has always played a huge role in my life. From the time I was 5, I remember being picky about what I wore. From an early age (much to my mother's dismay), I felt very connected to fashion as a means of expressing myself and a fun way of developing an individual voice. Styling and photography have always been big sources of inspiration for me, especially in looking at fashion and design from decades past.
Have you been shopping for your autumn/winter wardrobe?
This
winter I've been loving oversized knits – my favorites are from
Madewell and Vince; over-skinny pants – Zara has a pair of faux leather
cropped ones that I can't seem to take off. I'm pretty obsessed with my
Veda leather jackets and a shrunken varsity jacket I recently picked up at their sample sale. And Rag & Bone (Newbury), Loeffler Randall
and Zara (flat buckle) booties are my daily go-tos. I also just got two
hats (a wide brim and a chambray and leopard print cap) from my
favorite milliner and good friend Molly Yestadt of Yestadt Millinery.
What key pieces of clothing and accessories can't you live without?
My boyfriend recently got me a Gabriela Artigas
knot ring that I wear every day. His sister has a line called The Hellers and the Alisa dress that she did last season has become my
staple for fashion week, weddings and any excuse I have to dress up. If
my apartment caught fire I'd probably try to rescue a few key designer
shoes I've collected over the years, but all of it I imagine I could
live without.
What is on your shopping wishlist right now?
I'm in the market for some cozy, lightweight t-shirts. I also might need to add to my Gabriela Artigas ring collection...

Watch me get all creative!
Beautiful iPhone cases by Swash

I have been investigating iPhone cases. I finally made the move from Blackberry and am now wondering what took me so long especially given how good the camera is (no, after quite a bit of agonising I didn't fork out the extra for the iPhone 5 – the 4s seems to be able to do everything the 5 can once you've installed iOS6). But enough geek chat, much more important are these gorgeous iPhone cases from London based design duo Swash (Sarah Swash & Toshio Yamanaka). Do check out their website, it's a real treat – one of the best I've seen. Cases stocked at Net-a-Porter.

Fashion & Technology: DvF Through Google Glasses

I do love technology and I would love a pair of Google Glasses. No doubt about it. This is the first time a video – the glasses are worn by Diane von Furstenberg for her SS13 fashion show – has been shot entirely through 'Glass.' Project Glass they call it. According to Mashable, "The augmented reality-enhanced glasses have many smartphone-like functions: users can take pictures, record video, receive messages and check calendars, among other things." Super want.

Awesome New iPad App for Pinterest: Bazaart

Well, I do like a new app, although this is one currently only available for iPad. Bazaart has created an amazing interface which allows you to select Pinterest pins and collage them all together to publish on Pinterest and then share. And it really works – it is ridiculously easy to select your pins, move them around, resize, cut out and bring forward. Ok, so my first one (entitled Feline + Cosmic + Florals) isn't that amazing – I've never been that good with visual layout tbh. There are so many more fun/inspiring ones being posted all the time here at Bazaart on Pinterest. But does that really matter when it's so much fun? Goodbye photoshop, hello Bazaart.
