Stylonylon On Independent Fashion Bloggers' Links a La Mode – Again! |

17.1.13

Completely thrilled to be featured for the second week running on IFB's Links a La Mode. This was for The Anxiety of Blogging which started as just a small seed of an idea, then grew into quite a big piece with a whole photo shoot attached. One of the nicest things about Links a La Mode is connecting with new bloggers, a lot of them from the US, who I might never have come across otherwise. I'm really pleased the piece tapped into the emotional side of blogging and resonated with so many readers. Anyway, here's the round up – enjoy your reading!

Getting pretty obsessed with this Swedish lady – have posted about her before. Real name Jonna Lee. And this video for 'Y' has had over 10 millions views. Insane. Can't wait to see more + remixes.

How To DIY A Wash-Out Dip Dye Sock Bun |

Ok, I'm really the last person who should be doing a hair post. I never wear my hair down, I rarely brush it, only occasionally wash it... My everyday strategy is to create a scraped back messy scarecrow bun that just about passes my own personal standards, probably not the rest of the world's. However, since I was a teenager, when I first cut my hair short, I have been mad about hair colour – from white blonde, harlequin purple & red to every type of highlight, I pretty much did it all – except, what with growing my hair long so I wouldn't have to colour it while pregnant, I totally missed out on the dip dye fad. And that really bugs me, so much so that I'm considering getting it done for real, real soon. But in the meantime, I thought I'd try these Colour Xtreme Hair Art sprays (samples kindly sent – thankyou!). I won't lie, I wouldn't say the results were amazing. I tried the red, then the black. I think you really need lighter hair for the colour to really take, in which case I would totally go for pink or mix red and white as this, for me, is by far the coolest dip dye look. But still it was fun, and I quite like the results. Fyi I sprayed the ends with a towel around my shoulder, then I pony-tailed, rolled on my cut-off sock, tucked in my hair, pinned and added an elastic band around it all. Then I sprayed some more. It feels like a really heavy hairspray, so quite stiff – as if my hair wasn't birds nesty enough :) I'm thinking a couple of shampoos to wash out. If you want a more visual guide on how to do a sock bun, check out this video tutorial by Beauty Woo Me.

Vogue Paris Feb 2013 - Milla Jovovich & Manhattan Skyline |

15.1.13

I wouldn't normally post a magazine cover, but, WOW, isn't this Vogue Paris New York special just spectacular? It really took my breath away and I can't remember the last time a cover did that – Emmanuelle Alt, let me count the ways... The hazy sun on skyscrapers, the reds and blues of city lights, the daring rooftop nonchalance, Milla's combed-back quiff and futuristic/hints of bondage criss-cross leather (Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane, shot by Inez & Vinoodh). This just works for me. I saw this first on Fashion Foie Gras.

Stylonylon Interviews George Kotsiopoulos from Fashion Police |

So I was pretty excited to be offered an interview yesterday with LA fashion stylist George Kotsiopoulos to catch up on his Golden Globes' hits and misses before the Fashion Police Golden Globes special aired (showing in the UK on E! Entertainment tonight). If you watch Fashion Police, you'll know George, along with host Joan Rivers and co-host Kelly Osbourne, likes to tell it as it is. Here, he reveals his red carpet highs and lows – we talk Jennifer Lawrence and her structural bodice, Jessica Chastain in sea-foam green, Nicole Kidman bringing fashion, the beautiful Rachel Weisz, the return of the Angelina leg and Lucy Lui's and Sienna Miller's red carpet faux pas. Oh, and listen out for George's favourite moment of the night – you know, the bit where Adele wins for Skyfall and the camera cuts to Taylor Swift looking oh-so... peeved. (Also, US readers,  check out George's Suave Beauty competition here.)

Follow George on Twitter.

What Is She Wearing?! Saturday Night With Annabelle Wallis |

14.1.13

Annabelle Wallis by Stylonylon
Floral dress & blue velvet jacket - vintage
Booties - The Kooples (in the sale)
Bag - Miu Miu
Nothing beats an impromptu photo shoot on a Saturday night with gorgeous actress Annabelle Wallis. (You'll have seen her in The Tudors and Pam Am and keep an eye out for her in the new BBC2 drama Peaky Blinders with Cillian Murphy later this year). With an amazing wardrobe full of vintage, designer and highstreet, this girl knows how to put together an outfit and pull a pose. We spent the rest of the night nattering about music (can you believe my hubby's great grandmother played the trumpet for Annabelle's ancestor east London music hall star Marie Lloyd – crazy connections, right?) eating blue cheese, drinking red wine and weighing up whether Justin Timberlake's teaser video 'I'm Ready' is pure genius or just plain annoying. Thoughts? Hope you like the photos. We're planning a daylight shoot on a roof top next.

The Anxiety of Blogging - Can You Feel It? |

12.1.13

Why blog? It's a question I never used to ask myself, until recently. Spurred on by a sense of angst in the fashion blogosphere. It was unnerving to read Shini from Park & Cube – one of the most beautifully designed and photography rich blogs out there – questioning herself and her blog. Despite being perceived as an extremely successful blogger with a large and loyal following she blogged she feels foolish doing outfit posts, only makes enough from the blog to pay for her 'dedi-server every month + snacks' and that sponsors prefer the 'tall, pretty ones with 6-digit followings'. It was sad reading, but quickly overturned by an overwhelming outpour of adoration from her readers who left a string of moving and supportive comments. That would be enough for many to carry on blogging. Hopefully it gave her the boost she needed. I was then reminded of Susie Bubble questioning her relevance as a fashion blogger to the fashion industry in a post late last year. From what I remember, she didn't go much deeper than that, but it was there in plain black and white. But again, Susie's huge and committed fanbase would be enough reason for most to blog. Finally, this article on IFB (What No One Is Talking About On Social Media) quite succinctly sums up a lot of anxieties bloggers face but rarely admit to – from Shini's high-traffic-but-little-income conundrum and how hard it can be to work with brands to envy of more successful bloggers and how much of your personal life/problems to reveal online.

But it's hard. Even the smallest, newest blog dreams of going pro one day and yet the majority of bloggers, even the ones with thousands of followers, don't manage to monetize their blogs enough to quit the day job. So I guess you have to ask yourself what makes you blog. For some its an all-consuming passion for fashion that needs an outlet, being part of an online (and sometimes offline too) community, for others its a way to get their writing out there, and for some the perks and freebies are a big part. (Slight tangent: It seems to me fashion and beauty bloggers get quite a hard time over 'being in it for the freebies' when this kind of thing is part and parcel of the majority of journalism, PR, music and fashion jobs. Everyone appreciates the perks of their job, whatever sector they work in and most people manage to be gracious, transparent and honest in their handling of samples, gifts, press trips etc.)

So why, then, do I blog? What's the point? Do people like what I write? Does anybody really care about my frivolous outfit posts? I've actually been blogging on and off for nearly five years on different platforms in a variety of formats (my first was MySpace, can you believe it?! Snippets of my personal life kind of fictionalised). I  love the process of publishing, seeing copy and images bound together and given life – my first job was in book publishing if that helps explain. I love to write and more recently I love to take photographs. Blogging is the obvious way to combine all those things.

But, up until last autumn, my blogging was an ill-conceived side-kick to my freelancing. I thought it was important for a freelance journalist to be able to say "Yes, I have a blog." And even though I'd get absorbed over quiet work periods I was never that committed and there was no real direction or purpose. Then I had a baby. With that came maternity leave and the realisation of one of my biggest fears – that, as a new mother looking after a baby and not working, my self identity and strong sense of self would quickly slip away. As soon as the first three months of baby initiation had passed, I flung myself into my blog. I re-designed, I re-focused and started posting as much as I could. Almost immediately I started seeing my traffic improve. I felt invigorated. Outside and around of the delightful but sleep deprived task of looking after a new baby I had a, albeit entirely self-defined, purpose. It slots together so easily – the journalist in me loves planning content, writing copy, meeting deadlines, networking and contacting brands and PRs; the rookie geek in me has become obsessed with tweaking blog design, embracing social media and improving my photography and photo-editing skills. And the outfit posts ('ego-blogging' my husband likes to call it) helped me get over a bumpy post-pregnancy self image quandary allowing me to indulge in therapeutic dressing up time when I'm not getting out to that many parties.

Of course, like most bloggers, I'd love it if my blog could make money but the reality is it probably won't. I do use affiliate links and make the odd commission, but to make any serious money you'd need a tonne of traffic. And while I still believe running a functioning upbeat blog adds a string to your bow as a freelance journalist – it keeps your profile up and out there, gives you a focus and strengthens your idea generation for pitching, plus helps with contacts – ultimately, my blog is about something else. For me blogging has helped transition from working to mothering without having a full-on identity crisis. And that, dear readers, is reason enough to keep on going.

What about you? Why do you blog? Do you question yourself? Do you ever think of quitting? Do you feel what you ultimately want for you blog is attainable? What does blogging fulfil  for you?

An Elysian Sewing Box Rite of Passage |

A Sewing Box Rite of Passage
Elysian Liberty print sewing box
I do sew. In fits and starts. I've made ill-fitting skirts and cushions and quite gorgeous yakutas from fabric bought in Tokyo. I've made lavender bags with garden-grown lavender, frilly little knickers that have only just started to fall apart and a 70s collared man's shirt with disco buttons which was too tight. I've taken sewing night classes on Curtain Road – ladies, I know how to attach a sleeve – and yes, I machined the floor to ceiling lined curtains that hang in our sitting room (with Mummy Stylonylon's help, of course, that is not a one-person job). So it was about time I upgraded my sewing kit from shoe boxes to something a bit more sophisticated. Sewing box by Liberty, natch.
